Extending the Flex TextInput control to colorize background on focus
Normal Flex TextInput controls automatically give you that “halo” border whenever the user highlights or sets focus to a text field. Although when Flex first came out, I thought the halo border was a very slick way to show focus, but now I want it to be even more obvious to the user as they tab through a form a select a field for text entry.
First thing I did was create a new ActionScript component that extended TextInput. My new control would work every bit the same as the standard TextInput and only wanted to alter what happens when the fields focus event was fired. Luckily, all I had to do was override the focusIn and focusOut handler’s, call super() to execute any standard logic in the parent method, and set my styles.
The resulting component ended up like this:

Note the getStyle function calls. Typically, I keep all style-related colors and property values stored in a master style-sheet for my applications. This keeps the style-related values out of the views so I can easily manage them in one place.
For this new control, I defined a component-level type (or “class”) selector in my master CSS. Since this component extends TextInput, the normal styles for TextInput also apply, whereas the styles specified in the MyTextInput selector apply only to this control. Keep in mind, the “backgroundFocusInColor” and “backgroundFocusOutColor” properties are entirely made up and are not real component style properties, but it is totally legal to come up with your own style properties!

July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed the
test-launch of its heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S.
to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its
annual forecast for the heated tobacco business.
The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the second
quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.
The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.
Philip Morris has invested billions to promote
and expand its portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes
amid stricter regulations and falling smoking rates in some markets.
The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States is also
facing resistance from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting past
regulatory decisions, Reuters reported last week.
The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects by
the second half of 2025.
A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year, with Philip Morris saying the impact
from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.
This led the company to temper its expectations for volume
growth in the heated tobacco category to around 13% for the full year, down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.
However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised
its annual sales and profit forecasts, betting on demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches, as well as higher cigarette pricing.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International
(PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive
for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds of its
net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up from 50%
in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry
into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it
from May 2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
states ahead of the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after PMI receives
approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS
ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it
from 2025, he continued.
“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial
launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued,
adding launching in 10 states in the first year would
make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett,
equity analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a
positive for PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products
was no longer a priority. It recently scrapped
an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of
such products by 2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak
said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance
of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share,
and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive
an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.
PMI shares were up 1.5% on Thursday. (Reporting by Emma

Six months after making its world premiere at the Bentonville Film Festival, The Seven Faces Of Jane has
dropped in select theaters and VOD.
And as part of promotion some of the cast and crew for the anthology film were on hand for the
West Coast premiere in Los Angeles on Friday night.
The movie consists of eight short films, all of which star Gillian Jacobs as the title
character.
The anthology has eight different directors, including Jacobs along with Ken Jeong, Gia Coppola, Ryan Heffington, Alexandra Cassavetes, Boma Iluma,

sets out the requirements to serve the high and mighty
Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work a seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking
Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are made in a
new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr
Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs, which
included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese
received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome,
London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the
appropriate way’.

Joker: Folie à Deux was quickly booted from its top spot at the box
office after only one week and replaced by a spooky new champ.
With Halloween quickly approaching, Terrifier 3 slashed its way to the top of
the box office over the weekend. The plot about a deadly clown named Art, determined to literally kill the Christmas holiday spirit in a small town, earned $18.3 million at the box office
according to The Numbers.
The low-budget thriller, made for about $2 million and written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated blood
fest, which has received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences have ‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and given it a healthy 90-percent on the
popcornmeter.
Holding on to second place was The Wild Robot, an animated adventure about a robot named Roz who is
stranded on a small island after being shipwrecked. There, she bonds with the animals, who are
her new neighbors, and begins taking care of an orphaned goose.
Lupita Nyong’o voices Roz, while Pedro Pascal, Mark Hamill, Catherine
O’Hara and Ving Rhames offer their voices to other characters.
