Flex 4: Changing the “displayAsPassword” default character
Today I ran into a situation where I wanted to display my password characters as a bullet versus the default asterisk (“*”).
I thought this would be pretty simple to do but realized after digging through the Flex 4 SDK that there was no public property I could set to change this. I tried hacking commitProperties and a couple of other methods but came up short in those areas as well until I found the exact spot in the Flex libraries where this character was defined:

A-ha! I see here that it’s prefixed with the “mx_internal” namespace and I remembered from other examples around the web that you can easily tap into that namespace and modify properties not normally meant to be modified.
Luckily, I had already extended the TextInput class for various other reasons and decided to add an event listener for the CREATION_COMPLETE lifecycle event of the component. This was added in the constructor:

…and voila! By tapping into the mx_internal namespace, I found I could modify the normally private variable “passwordChar” and set it to something I preferred better (in this case, the bullet point used in some sites like Twitter).

injured many others who were caught up in the ‘ferocious’ blast, a court heard today.
Hashem Abedi, 22, was allegedly linked to
the bombing by a scrap of metal from a Consumer’s
Pride vegetable oil can found at the scene of the carnage.
He had also allegedly bought screws and nails for deadly
shrapnel and used fake online accounts to purchase two of the three chemicals to make
TATP explosives, jurors were told.
His brother Salman Abedi, 22, then detonated the large device as music fans
were leaving an Ariana Grande concert at 10.31pm on May
22 2017.
Prosecutor Duncan Penny QC said the explosion was the ‘culmination of months of
planning, experimentation and preparation by the two of them’.
He added: ‘The bomb was detonated and was self-evidently designed to kill and maim as many people
as possible.
‘It was packed with lethal shrapnel and it was detonated in the middle of a
crowd in a very public area – the intention being to kill and
to inflict maximum damage.’

Opening the younger brother’s trial at the Old Bailey, Mr Penny QC said:

The court heard how Salman Abedi, carrying the
bomb in a rucksack, joined the throng of parents and families picking up young concert-goers in the foyer of the 21,

Mr Penny said: ‘Such was the ferocity of this explosion that Salman Abedi was dismembered in the process.
‘The scene that met the survivors and those that attended thereafter was one of destruction and chaos.
‘Twenty-two people – men, women, teenagers and
a child – were killed, 28 people were very seriously injured, a further 63 people were seriously injured, 111 others were also hospitalised,’ he said.
‘In all, 237 were physically injured in addition to
those killed, whilst a total of 670 people have since reported psychological
trauma as a result of these events.
‘The bomb which was detonated was self-evidently designed to kill and
maim as many people as possible.

group, said in a statement. “What remains to be seen is how long shift work will remain stalled and whether we’ll start to see a greater divergence across individual regions as they recover at different rates.”
“The remainder of summer will tell us whether the volume of COVID-19 cases means we’ve hit a peak in the recovery for the foreseeable, or if jobs growth will improve or slide backwards.”
The surge in COVID-19 cases, particularly in southern and
southwestern states, has pushed the U.S. case total to almost 5 million, according to a Reuters tally website and
deaths are nearing 160,000.
Alongside the plateau in hourly worker shifts, measures of foot traffic to commercial destinations has also hit a wall after steady
increases in May and June.
Estimates of national foot traffic based on mobile phone data analyzed
by Safegraph website indexed to March 1, fell to
the lowest since late May. In the second week of June,
that data had indicated that foot traffic had recovered to nearly 98% of March 1 levels,
but in the latest week had retreated to 91.2%.
Similar data from Unacast website shows the same peak in activity in mid-June with
effectively no change since.
Other measures that combine a range of factors including demand,
employment and health data paint a similar picture.
An Oxford website Economics index combining a variety of economic, health and other
measures has remained flat in recent weeks. Its health component, which had improved into mid-June, is now at its lowest since late April.
A New York Fed website index also fell over the last week.

Embattled utility firm Thames Water plans to hike executive pay if regulators limit how much it can hand
out in bonuses.
In a move that sparked a fierce backlash from unions and campaigners, Britain’s biggest water supplier reportedly wants to reward its top brass with bumper
pay rises.

bringing it to the brink of collapse with just enough cash to
survive until March.
Thames Water is scrambling to avoid a taxpayer bailout amid mounting
losses and a £17billion debt pile.
And it comes as the utility plans to raise bills by at least a third for its 16million customers in London and the southeast.
Thames Water and its peers are also under fire for dumping sewage
into Britain’s lakes and rivers.
Chris Weston, the group’s chief executive, last
month refused to rule out accepting a bonus for the year despite a 40 per
cent spike in pollution incidents.
Weston is on a total pay package of as much as £2.3million a year and pocketed
a £195,000 bonus for just three months’ work after he joined
in January last year.

The Government is planning to bring in legislation this year that would allow the regulator Ofwat to ban performance-related bonuses if companies fall short of expectations.
‘We have made it very clear to Ofwat that, if it

loss of performance-related pay plans,’ Thames Water said in a report, seen by the Financial Times.

show Thames Water to be ‘truly out of touch’.
‘It would also raise questions about whether the current levels of regulation or the government’s planned levels of regulation are

‘Actions such as this will only add to the sense that the privatisation of
water has been a serious failure’.
Thames Water declined to comment. Ofwat did not respond to a request for comment.
Thames Water is seeking a £3billion loan from its creditors which would
allow the company to continue operating until May 2026, by which time it expects to have completed a
separate search for a new owner. However, that plan is
opposed by a group of smaller lenders.
And the firm was dealt a further blow last year when Ofwat ruled it could
raise customer bills by a third over the next five years – less
than the 59 per cent hike Thames Water was seeking.
